Copy of an email sent by me to Binu Nairji of the Rafi Foundation, Mumbai.

Yes Binuji, agreed that we the fans of Rafi Sahab have done precious little on this matter and that one web article will never be able to achieve the Bharat Ratna to Rafi Sahab. I have been pleading with you all for the last one year to take up the campaign and have given several times suggestions, offer my help in collecting signatures, writing letters to political parties, sending emails to all the websites of political parties, enticing the media (both print and visual) to aid us in our campaign, and most importantly to start the campaign long long back. You will appreciate that individually we cannot do these things and it requires the backing of a strong organization which the Rafi Foundation should have become by now. Unfortunately, that is not the case also. What is the membership of the Rafi Foundation ? I have posted on several websites and also am campaigning on several fora for membership drive and asking Rafi Fans in various cities to start branches (wings) of the Rafi Foundation. You will recall that when the first article appeared on www.mohdrafi.com sometime last year (again by Raju Kortiji), I had written on these very lines. What was done between that time and the newest article now on the same website ? Nothing concrete. I have even this time suggested that MPs from Punjab, more particularly Navjot Singh Siddhu (who represents Amritsar in the Parliament) should be approached.

Whatever be the political pressures and compulsions, our efforts too should have been there on this matter and if we continue in this same fashion, let us forget the issue in toto. There is no point in further wasting our time on an issue on which we ourselves are not serious. If every Rafi Fan was to take matters into his/her hands, then there will never be any direction in any activity and hence the matter was left to the Rafi Foundation from the begining to lead us all. I have also several times commented on the same website that we the Rafi Fans are with you in all your such campaigns.

I can also assure you that just as you have been pointing out the apathy of Rafi fans to any such causes, many of them think on similar lines about the Rafi Foundation too and comment that the activities of Rafi Foundation is limited to just staging the "Second Saturday" programmes in Mumbai and otherwise writing their individual comments on www.mohdrafi.com. I have seen in recent times many big fans of Rafi Sahab and who are doing wonderful work in their own capacity and not one of them is a member of the Rafi Foundation for reasons best known to them.

And as long as the Rafi Foundation does not lead us all, we the Rafi Fans will continue to pursue our own interests, including showcasing our "singing abilities", for we all require some satisfaction after all in whatever we do.

With best regards,

A S MURTY = HYDERABAD.

MUSICAL SESSION - 2ND NOV 2008

RAFI FOUNDATION

HYDERABAD CHAPTER

PRESIDENT SECRETARY TREASURER

S RAMAKRISHNA A S MURTY S CHANDAR

MANAGING COMMITTEE MEMBERS

Mrs. Radha Chandar (Ladies' Rep), R. Padmanabhan, G. Sunder Rajan, Sunil "Sahil" Sharma

MUSICAL SESSION - 2nd NOVEMBER, 2008

The last musical session that the Rafi Foundation, Hyderabad Chapter, had was on the 12th October 2008 and since then getting suitable dates for the next session took considerable time to decide. Ultimately it was decided that we have it today i.e. on the 2nd November 2008 and that was precisely what was done at the SMR Empire in West Marredpally.

PRELOGUE :

Short Attendance : Today was unusually a small bunch of music enthusiasts who could assemble and then not all of them came on time. Thus not only was the attendance today sparse, but the musical session was also robbed of precious time due to late coming by those who attended. We could begin the session only around 4.15 p.m. instead of the usual 3.00 or 3.30 p.m. that we are used to.

R Padmanabhan had a minor surgery on his right eye and thus was incapacitated to be able to attend. We had known that he would be not be attending in advance. So also, Mrs Nirmala Dhepe had sent me a mail about four days back informing me that she and her husband Nitin would be going over to Mumbai and Goa and would therefore not be in a position to attend. Raghavendra Rao was to attend but telephoned to me twice, first at around 3.00 p.m. informing that he would turn up around 4.30 p.m. and again a second time at 5.15 p.m. saying that as he was already delayed it would not be proper for him to start at that hour to come and attend. He was apologetic too. Many others had promised that they will come, but neither did we receive any communication nor did they attend today's musical session. A new member who has not yet joined us, Mr Yashwant too had wanted to come. Later towards 9.15 p.m. he informed me that as he had to go over to his Office today also and as he was unduly delayed there, he could not attend our musical session and promised that he will attend from the next session onwards. He went on to ask me the date for the next musical session, which however we have not finalized as yet. I learnt from Chandar that Santosh too was tied up with Office work and that he would not be able to join us today. Subramanyam informed me on reaching the SMR Empire that Mrs Pannicker too was out of station and hence had not joined us.

THE MUSICAL THRILL :::

I had myself got delayed today. I had gone to see a friend to collect some DVDs of Shrikant Narayan, the great singer of Mumbai who was in Hyderabad recently and whom I and Ramakrishna had met also. Alas, the DVDs were not ready. I rang up to Subramanyam to inform that I would be able to reach only by 3.30 p.m. As I reached West Marredpally and was just around the corner to SMR Empire, Chandar rang me up enquiring where I was. I informed him that I will join them all in the next ten minutes as I just had to buy some snacks etc and order for the tea. By the time I went to the 6th floor of SMR Empire, besides Subramanyam and his wife, Chandar and Mrs Radha Chandar, I also found N R Padmanabhan and his wife. The music system was already arranged but no singing had started by then. A little later Sanjay Kulkarni, Mrs Kshama Kulkarni and their son joined us. Once the harmonium and tabla etc were arranged, we thought it best to start the musical session as it was already 4.15 p.m. And so did we. Since the Kulkarnis joined us after a pretty long gap, we asked them to start the day's proceedings and Mrs Kshama Kulkarni started the day with a Marathi Bhajan. A good beginning for a lively musical session that presented 30 renditions in all. I am giving the full list of all the songs as I was also noting down these details for my reporting. Mrs Kshama Kulkarni, playing the harmonium with Sanjay Kulkarni playing the Tabla, went on to render two more Hindi film songs. Mrs Radha Chandar was the next singer to present us first with another Bhajan and another melody from an old Hindi movie before passing on the baton to Mrs Kshama Kulkarni once again. By then, Sanjay Deshpande and his son, Sachin Deshpande too had joined us. One song each by Mrs Kshama Kulkarni and Mrs Radha Chandar gave room for N R Padmanabhan to present his choice of two songs. Subramanyam went on to sing two solo songs and one duet with his wife too and Mrs Subramanyam then rendered a Talat Mahmood Song. The Karaoke system seemed to be beeping and soon Chandar took over, rendering three songs in a row. I sang two songs before we took time off for some small snacks with tea. The singing continued once again, passing from one singer to the other upto 7.00 p.m. Since the attendance was less this time, those present could sing many songs and that too at a stretch.

The following is the full list of all the songs which were rendered today :

(1) Marathi Bhajan by Mrs Kshama Kulkarni. Tabla accompaniment from Sanjay Kulkarni. (2) Suno Sajna Papihe Re Ne (film Aaye Din Bahar Ke) by Mrs Kshama Kulkarni. (3) Panchi Banoo Banke Phirun Mast Gagan Mein (Chori Chori) by Mrs Kshama Kulkarni. (4) Prabhu Tum Antaryami – bhajan by Mrs Radha Chandar. (5) Balama Manena (Opera House) by Mrs Radha Chandar, (6) Yeh Daulat Bhi Lelo Yeh Shohrat Bhi Lelo (private Ghazal by Jagjeet Singh/Chitra Singh) rendered by Mrs Kshama Kulkarni, (7) Kahe Tarsaye Jiyara (Chitralekha) by Mrs Radha Chandar. (8) Man Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj (Baiju Bawra) by N R Padmanabhan, (9) Saranga Teri Yaad Mein (Saranga) by N R Padmanabhan, (10) Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaye (Anand) by Subramanyam, (11) Sham-e-gham ki kasam (Talat Mahmood song) by Subramanyam. (12) Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam (Geeta Dutt from Kagaz Ke Phool) by Mrs Subramanyam and also joined in by Subramanyam. (13) Jaye to Jaye to Kahan (Taxi Driver – Talat Mahmood) by Subramanyam, (14) Apni Ankhon Mein Basakar (Thokar – Rafi Sahab) by S Chandar (15) Mein Kahin Kavi Na Ban Jaoon (Pyar Hi Pyar – Rafi Sahab) – S Chandar, (16) Meet Na Mila Re Manka (Abhimaan) S Chandar (he wanted some fast number as upto then only the very poignant and slow songs had surfaced). (17) Yeh Zulf Agar Khulke Bikhar Jaye (Kajal) A S Murty, (18) Dil Ke Aiyeene Mein (Aao Pyar Karein) A S Murty.

CHHOTA SA BREAK

(19) Saaz Ho Tum Awaaz Hun Mein (Saaz Aur Awaaz) – N R Padmanabhan, (20) O Sajna Barka Bahar Ayee (Parakh) – N R Padmanabhan, (21) Apna Hai to Begana Nahin (a rare Rafi Sahab song and none knew the name of the movie) – Subramanyam, (22) Yeh Ansoo Mere Dil Ki Zuban Hai (Humrahi) by Subramanyam, (23) Marathi Song – Kaal Ratri Swpna Mathe Ek Raja Aaya – Mrs Kshama Kulkarni, (24) Aaja Sanam Chaandni Mein Hum Tum (Chori Chori) by Mrs Kshama Kulkarni, (25) Ek Shahanshah Ne Banwake Haseen Tajmahal (from Leader a masterpiece duet) Mrs Kshama Kulkarni, (26) Gayati Vanamali in Sanskrit by Mrs Radha Chandar, (27) Kuhu Kuhu Bole Koyaliya – another classic duet – by Mrs Radha Chandar, (28) Woh Jab Yaad Aaye Bohat Yaad Aaye – Mrs and Mr Subramanyam, (29) Vaada Karla Saajna (Haath Ki Safai) by Mrs Subramanyam and A S Murty, (30) Zindagi Bhar Nahi Bhulegi (Barsaat Ki Raat) by Chandar and partly by A S Murty, (31) Aaj Ki Raat Mere Dil Ki Salami lele (Ram Aur Shyam) by S Chandar and lastly (32) Laga Chunari Mein Daag Chhupaoon Kaise from N R Padmanabhan.

Just as the beginning was a very soulful rendition by Mrs Kshama Kulkarni, so also the end was a superb song rendered so beautifully by N R Padmanabhan.

It was 7.00 p.m. and time to leave. Having settled the bills and helped Subramanyam take the music system home, we all departed with a sense of utter enjoyment and singing to our hearts' content.

EPILOGUE:

We had hoped that A V Srinivasan, S Ramakrishna, Gopal Sunder Rajan, Rafiq would all attend. But unfortunately we had to conduct the musical session without their presence today. For sometime now, Sahil Sharma has not been in touch and despite my best efforts to reach him over the telephone, I am unable to get to talk to him. I have sent him emails, messages on Orkut and tried his mobile number several times which is ever ringing without Sahil answering the phone. Today I gave several calls to Sunder Rajan on his mobile and I ended up with the same result. So also is the case with Rafiq whose landline number keeps on ringing without anyone lifting the phone.

This way only 12 were available today for the musical session which is a very sad sight.

Friends, let us organize ourselves first. I have repeatedly acknowledged that it is never possible perhaps for all members to attend all the musical sessions. We live in a very busy and large city and we all have chores to attend to. Ours is a friendly musical group and there are never any very hard or harsh rules. We make the set of rules, if any, for our community convenience and we always would amend them to suit our needs. But while we can be so flexible, we as members of the Rafi Foundation, Hyderabad Chapter have to also show a little more interest in our organization.

We often decide that we will have the musical sessions on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month. We also rise up to call for a musical session if we are delayed beyond the "alternate Sundays" dictum. Several of us also opine from time to time that continuous musical sessions will pave way for better understanding of one another and better singing and also for smooth collection of our monthly subscriptions.

Once the date for a musical session is arrived at, regular mails are sent to all our members and those who do not have access to emails/internet, I also try to make personal phone calls. You will all agree that making so many calls to so many persons is not always possible. Some of our members duly acknowledge each and every mail that is sent to them and we are proud to have such dedicated members amongst us. But then not all give confirmatory signals about their attendance and I am left to wonder whether to make phone calls to even those who read their emails very regularly. Sometimes when time permits I do make such calls but it is not always possible to call all our members also by phone. It would be much better if our members themselves send me their confirmation by email or contact me over phone to confirm their participation. We will have known a definite number of members atleast two or three days in advance. And this count helps us plan accordingly. It would also help us to redraw the date for the musical session if advance information is received by us about non-participation by members.

Since the venue is pre-decided to be at SMR Empire in West Marredpally and it is known to most of our regulr members, we do not give each time the directions etc. For the first timers to this venue however, we try to give the fullest description so that they have no difficulty in reaching the venue and on time.

Subramanyam has to book the hall in advance by paying the rent for the same, get the rooms cleaned and arrange the chairs, water etc. He has to make two or three trips from his flat on the 1st floor to go over to the terrace and make these arrangements all by himself. We all know that Subramanyam is a perfectionist and a man known to keep to punctuality. He is up and about by 2.00 p.m. and waits eagerly for the clock to strike 3.00 p.m. He is generally on the rooftop room a good 15 minutes in advance and waits endlessly for our members to arrive.

We have also decided to bring along the snacks and order for the tea etc beforehand itself so that precious time is not wasted after the musical session has started. But if the attendance is as short as 12 members compared to our regular of 18 to 20 members, a lot of eatables that are "purchased" from our common pool is also wasted. We expect the organization to grow from one musical session to the other and hope that the presence of our members in musical sessions keep going up by atleast two or three new members.

After today's miniscule attendance, we all felt disappointed. The upbeatness was missing today. While several good renditions came up today also, there was some shine missing today from our previous gatherings. And this situation will never be allowed to be repeated. So much was the disappointment amongst those present that we had even considered having only "ONCE A MONTH" musical sessions and if the trend is not reversed instantly we may have to face up this kind of unwanted situation.

Friends, normally for any lengthy communication like this, generally it is assumed that the first part is written first. However in the instant case, I have first written this piece of EPILOGUE first rather than the happier one PRELOGUE. The reason is simple. The disappointment of the pathetic attendance overshadowed the bliss of the several good renditions that we were able to sing and listen.

I would sincerely request our members to respond to the communications that all receive on the dates of the musical shows by confirming their presence or absence at least three days in advance. This gives us some idea on whether to go ahead with the Musical Session on a particular occasion or not. Genuine absence is always understood and taken in the right spirit. We consider ours as a very friendly Musical Group with not very strict rules to follow. Also in order to have livelier musical sessions we have to be stricter disciplinarians that we presently are. We once again reiterate that we acknowledge that it is not always possible for all our members to attend all the Musical Sessions. But if we make slightest amendments in our busy schedules, then the attendance would automatically show better sight. It also reassures for some of our members who have to travel very wide distances to see bigger gatherings.

We have not been able to collect subscriptions from some of our members who have not attended the musical sessions since the time the proper body was formed and a resolution passed to collect monthly subscriptions. In the last musical session on the 12th October 2008, we had also distributed the membership application form to all those present on that day. We were hoping to give it to the others who did not attend our last musical session and that we can get more membership. Unfortunately, some of our regular members who missed the 12th October 2008 session, also did not attend today also. Also the collections for November 2008 have not even started, leave alone the collections for the previous months accomplished.

For any activity for any organization, a basic pool of funds is always required. Most of our members who are regularly attending have paid up their subscriptions and Chandar is maintaining all these records.

We have several other topics to be discussed :

  1. Organizing a grand musical show during Feb/March 2009
  2. Campaign for Bharat Ratna revived by Rafi Foundation
  3. Upcoming Musical shows on Rafi Sahab at other centres
  4. Preparation for publication of a book on lyrics of all the songs of Rafi Sahab according to the Lyricists and/or Music Directors
  5. Other activities of our organization

None of these could be taken up or even informed due to lack of our membership strength today.

Friends, let us get our acts together first. We have to be one of the best organized musical groups in Hyderabad and for that we have to ponder over the declining trend that seems to have set in. Hyderabadis are known to be less pro-active and this equation is proving to the hilt. We would like our organization to be known for more positive outlook than these demeaning trends. We were the envy of most of the groups of Rafi Sahab's fans and we were the talking point. For all good reasons too. We have work staring into our faces. Work that needs to be done and fast. Time and tide never wait for anyone is a well known adage. KAAL KARE SO AAJ KAR, AAJ KARE SO AB… goes another saying, is it not ?? We believe that any work left to be done for the next day will NEVER be done.

If this communication has come up as a bit too harsh on words, let me emphasize that it is only the feelings after dismal musical sessions, if I may call them. But corrective measures will be taken and like we said somewhere above also, this will never be allowed to be repeated.

Rafi Foundation, Hyderabad Chapter is not an organization that will not rebound back. It carries on its shoulders the very name that spelt magic and divinity to millions of fans of the legendary and charismatic personality who gave a brief Earthly Appearance from 1942 to 1980 – MOHAMMED RAFI SAHAB. By HIS grace and by HIS blessings, we will carry forward our mission and our goals. Yes our membership will soar soon. Newer members are going to join us which is a very positive sign. They will bring in newer members again. Our regular members have already been doing stupendous work in spreading our message across the twin-cities.

Lastly, I would request all those who are in our mailing list to confirm to us whether they would like to continue getting all our mails and information. There is no point in sending mails to anyone who is even a bit disinterested, although it does not require any specific effort on our part to send the mails and information to them. We would not like to pound them with unnecessary emails and also float under the false feeling of a bigger organization than we actually are.

In order not to dampen the spirits of those who are yet to join our fold, I have sent them only the first narration under PRELOGUE and have not sent them the "Epilogue" piece. This full text is going only to all our regular members.

WITH THE BEST OF GREETINGS AND MUSICAL THOUGHTS

MUSICAL SESSION ON 2nd Nov 2008

RAFI FOUNDATION

HYDERABAD CHAPTER

Friends, my recent mails on the next musicl session gave several optional dates - 26th October, 2nd November and 9th November 2008. This was immediately after our musical session on the 12th October 2008. Some of our members pointed out that 26th October was just before Diwali and we had better postpone it to a later date. We thought of 2nd November as the next date, but it did not suit a few more and then we had planned for 9th November 2008. To this some more of our members pointed that it was unduly delayed and they opined that 2nd November 2008 should be the date for our next musical session.

Considering these, I did talk to a few of our friends and found that most would prefer 2nd November 2008 as the date for our next musical session. We will therefore have our next musical session on the coming Sunday, 2nd November 2008 at S M R Empire from 3.00 p.m. (the usual venue and the timings). I will have a word with Subramaniam too tomorrow on the eve of Diwali and he will arrange the hall for us.

Like we had suggested the last time, I would like each one of us to have a list of 5 songs given to me in advance so that the common songs can be diluted and a mock programme can be conducted, all with announcements etc. We can have the 'theme based" programmes from a later date onwards as I received only one response so far on this subject.

I would once again invite all those who have not participated in our musical sessions so far to attend on the 2nd November 2008. Some of our regular members too have not been attending our musical sessions of late and this trend has to be reversed. Some of our members are not checking up their mails regularly and this hampers communication.

On our subject of a grand musical show towards Dec 2008, I have to inform you all that the spade work has just begun and soon we will be drawing up a full scale programme which may be held around Feb/March 2009 only. Sponsorship is delaying the programme, but this will be sorted out soon. Unless we are sure of certain funds, we cannot go ahead with the rest of the organizing. That is the reason why Feb/March 2009 is now the target. We should have a proper programme in place in the coming weeks.

Let us therefore meet once again on the 2nd November 2008 at S M R Empire complex in Marredpally. For exact location of our venue, members can contact me or Subramaniam (27700235).

See you all on the 2nd November 2008.

A S MURTY 93912 67272 27th October 2008 HYDERABAD.

MIDOMI.COM === A FEW GOOD SINGERS

Poornimaji from Toronto, Canada, is yet again a good singer. She chooses her songs very carefully and does her best in rendering them with utmost dedication. Here she is with the immortal Rafi Sahab bhajan from Baiju Bawra: Man Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj - not the "cup of tea" for most singers though everyone's fancy.

MIDOMI.COM === A FEW VERY GOOD SINGERS

And RAMALAKSHMIJI sings beautifully too :

गूंजते हैं तेरे नगमों से अमीरों के महल,
झोंपड़ों में भी गरीबों के तेरी आवाज़ है,
अपनी मौसिकी पर सबको फक्र होता है मगर,
मेरे साथी आज मौसिकी को तुम पर नाज़ है

ONE MORE MUSICAL SESSION – ONE MORE MUSICAL GATHERING

The date 21st September 2008 was decided quite sometime back and so also the venue i.e. S M R Empire complex in Marredpally. Each intervening day looked too long for me and I was eagerly waiting for this opportunity to meet all the members of the Rafi Foundation – Hyderabad Chapter. I had an intuition that newer members would join us this time. I had sent the information to all quite some time back and I had nothing more to do for nearly 10 days. But I did send a few more mails, by way of reminders (not that it was required at all) and sending the detailed directions on how to reach the place (copied from an earlier mail from Subramaniam). Then, two days prior to our musical session I first telephone to Subramaniam and when the confirmation came, my joy knew no bounds. I immediately rang up Chandar and then the others. A V Srinivasan conveyed his inability as he had already fixed up another programme for the day. Sunil Sharma (Sahil) too had a prior commitment. But those who conveyed they were available all came except for Sunder Rajan.

We all assembled between 3.00 p.m. and 3.30 p.m. and soon the singing session got going in full swing. The first timers who came this Sunday are as follows:

1. Mrs Panicker (Resident of SMR Empire complex) - She sang quite a few songs in Malayalam, including a bhajan or two. She has a very sweet voice and we expect her to be a regular and to sing in Hindi too.

2. Mr. Raj Kumar (Ramakrishna's close friend from their Mouthorgan group whom we had met earlier too). He played quite a few good and fast songs on his "harmonica" and entertained us all. I am sure he liked our gathering too and that he would be a regular in our musical sessions.

3. Mr. Veerabhadram (yet another addition from "The Oriental Insurance Company Ltd" and thanks once again to Raghavendra Rao). While he did not sing any song, he did seem to relish the songs rendered by all our members. Perhaps he too would be our regular members here onwards.

4. Mr. Prashant and his wife (I did learnt her name on that day, but have forgotten now – I should have jotted it right away). Prashant is a stage singer, a professional artist and sang songs of Rafi Sahab, Kishore Kumar and even Telugu Songs. He said they both would be regulars in our group. Raghavendra Rao introduced the duo to us.

5. Vivekananda Rao – son of Raghavendra Rao who too sat through the entire session and perhaps liked the songs.

Our regular members included Subramaniam, Chandar and his wife Mrs Radha, self and my wife Vijaya, Nitin and his wife Mrs Nirmala Dhepe, Sanjay and his son Sachin Deshpande, Ramakrishna, Padmanabhan, and N. R. Padmanabhan. That way we were 18 music lovers singing away for four hours, one after the other.

I found N R Padmanabhan singing very well this time. He sang from his heart and chose his songs well too. Subramaniam, Chandar, Mrs Radha, Padmanabhan all sang just as exceptionally well as they always do. This time Ramakrishna besides playing his harmonica, also sang one song of Rafi Sahab.

We were all so engrossed in the songs that no one bothered about any snacks, etc. However, snacks in small measure were arranged despite the heavy rain and water gushing down the streets.

At the end of the singing session around 7.15 p.m., I addressed the gathering informing all that we plan to hold a musical show on a big scale in December 2008, coinciding with the 84th Birth Anniversary of Rafi Sahab. I also informed all that the Bank account was opened with Bank of India, Ameerpet. We shall also register our body as Rafi Foundation-Hyderabad Chapter in the coming weeks. Ramakrishna, while addressing the gathering, informed that he will invite a person who had been close to Rafi Sahab for our forthcoming musical show. Raghavendra Rao also briefly spoke about how our group should accommodate singers of all languages, just as retaining the spirit of Rafi Sahab.

We all decided to give the next two Sundays a break due to the festival season and re-assemble at the same place on 10th October 2008 (Sunday). The immediate TV programme on SONY TV by Sonu Nigam was on everyone's mind and we all hurried to our homes to be in front of the telly. This was a telecast of a programme – Rafi Resurrected – organized by the London Symphony in Birmingham (UK) and Sonu Nigam presented some of the best songs of Rafi Sahab. As we all later say, the programme which started at 8.00 p.m. went on upto 11.00 p.m. (with scores of Ads though).

Friends, I would like all to be regulars on the internet also. You can participate in discussions on various good articles that keep coming up on www.mohdrafi.com, www.eternalrafi.com and also on Orkut where communities on Rafi Sahab are growing by the day.

Finally wishing all a very happy festival season ahead. Keep smiling, keep singing and wish everyone with a ADAABRAFI. Thanks..

MUSICAL SESSION AT KARMANGHAT

Hello friends,

The musical session at my house today was once again an enjoyable affair though not many could join us for various reasons. There were more absentees today than those who could come, but little that dampen the session. While I could invite most, I also could not personally talk to a few of our members.

Chandar and his wife Mrs Radha picked up both Subramaniam and Padmanabhan, on their way to my house (a full 45 Kms one-way journey for them). Raghavendra Rao took turns in buses and a sharing auto to reach my house. Ramakrishna came on his own. I had also invited my brother-in-law N Prasad and his family and that way, though a small gathering, the session got going in full swing.

A new element in today's musical session was the introduction of a video karaoke CD that Chandar had brought along. This was a new experience, but one that we all could relate to very easily. The lyrics keep coming on the TV monitor once the CD is played through a DVD player attached to the TV (it would work similarly on any Computer too). Fifteen songs in the CD were played and were sung by each one of us. Duets were there too and Chandar and Mrs Radha were there to sing them. I and my wife, Vijaya, too tried one duet but since the lyrics were new to Vijaya, we could not sing fully. Once this was tried successfully by all, the regular songs by all of us were rendered. Since the attendance was thin, those present today could get more number of songs.

We all assembled by about 3.30 p.m. and the session continued right upto 7.30 p.m.

My brother-in-law N Prasad who joined us with his wife Vijayalakshmi and two lovely daughters - Samhitha and Sahithi - were too fascinated with this kind of experience. Their younger daughter Sahithi remarked that this concept of having musical sessions was too good. Both these youngsters also presented a Telugu song - Desham Manade, Tejam Manade.

Samhitha is in X class and closely following her in the IX class is Sahithi, both students of Dilsukhnagar Public School.

We also could collect the membership subscription from those present today for September 2008 and have also finalized the opening of the Bank account as mentioned in my earlier email.

Subramaniam has arranged for our group to have the musical sessions in his complex (the terrace room - sort of a penthouse) in his apartments on a regular basis on payment of a small amount of Rs.200/- per day. All the members agreed to have the next musical sessions at this venue. We have also decided that since most members could not come today, the next musical session will be on the 21st September 2008 at this permanent venue.
The exact time will be intimated once again through a regular mail much before the date of the musical session.

Our appeal to all our members to be present in large numbers to make the most of these musical sessions. We appreciate that due to some personal constraints many could not make it this time. Ramakrishna, our President, suggested that we should have these musical sessions on every 2nd and 4th Sunday in a month and we all readily agreed to the same.

We may have to plan and chalk out a good musical programme in December 2008, coinciding with the 84th Birth Anniversary of Rafi Sahab. Let us all bring in newer members so that our strength grows and the collections are substantial to meet the requirements for a lovely show. Our idea is to present to this beautiful city a programme that they have never seen before. It would be befitting the name and stature of Rafi Sahab who towers above all as far as the world of music is concerned. We would invite as Chief Guest someone who had known Rafi Sahab personally. We could also invite a close relative of Rafi Sahab (those who are in Mumbai).

Sponsors for such a programme can be scouted with Country Club, Airtel, Music World, Planet Music, Reliance Mobile and many more from the corporate world. Smaller brands also would join the bandwagon once the process is set rolling. Media also would play an important role in the days to come and we should have our contacts in the Media alerted. We also have the good offices of Tanvir Beg Sahab and Mr Sarvar Ali who are very experienced themselves in organizing such shows.

We will get the best of singers from Mumbai, Chennai and elsewhere. A good Orchestra can be arranged locally.

It takes almost four months of proper planning to go into all the aspects of organizing a programme that would be talked about for years later on. The time is just ripe therefore, for all of us to think on these lines and prepare a solid blueprint and plunge ourselves into action.

Rafi Sahab's blessing are always with us and this factor alone assures me that the programme that we undertake four months from now would be a stupendous success. Then, we also have the small but committed army of Rafi Sahab's greatest followers in our group and this is one reason for me to think so high about a musical programme for Hyderabad city.

I INVITE SUGGESTIONS AND ACTION PLAN FROM OUR MEMBERS ON THIS ONE SUBJECT THAT KEEPS ME ENGROSSED.

Let us enrol newer members from our contacts and grow. Each member can get newer members and the bigger the organization, the easier for us to organize. Shortly we will devise an application form which can be first filled in by our regular members and which will be useful at the time of enrollment of newer members. We are also thinking of registering our group in the nomenclature of RAFI FOUNDATION (Hyderabad Chapter).
That way, we can organize musical shows/programmes with much more conviction.

FRIENDS, THE MUSICAL SESSIONS ARE OUR STRENGTH AND AN OPPORTUNITY TO MEET AND KNOW ONE ANOTHER.

Let us all meet on the 21st Setpember 2008 (Sunday) and march ahead.

With musical greetings to each one of you.

RAFI FOUNDATION - HYDERABAD CHAPTER

RAFI FOUNDATION
HYDERABAD CHAPTER

Hyderabad and the surrounding areas, indeed the entire State of Andhra Pradesh was being pounded, day after day, with continuous downpour for the past one week. The intensity of the rains grew with each passing day and by Saturday, the 9th August 2008, the city recorded the second highest rainfall in the last decade. Normally, a few spells of rains are enough to choke the city, what with overflowing drains, water logging at all intersections, collapse of some buildings, failure of electricity etc. Total disruption of normal life is what comes every monsoon with the civic authorities as always being caught napping. And this past one week saw more rainfall than the entire last year, or so it was felt. There was no respite from the rainfall on Saturday and the newspapers and the Met. Dept. predicted Sunday to be the same. Towards the night I was a bit apprehensive if our musical session on Sunday could be accomplished at all. Our members have to travel from different corners of the city and some have to cover almost 30 Kms for such musical sessions. Will it be possible at all for them ? The battered roads, the pooling cess of water in several localities and the attendant traffic snarls all were hurdles. And then the rains would not allow any of us to venture out. What if ?..

Many of our friends in the recent times have narrated their own similar experiences when a programme of Rafi Sahab was being organized. All of them had mentioned to me that the "show will go on" and that Rafi Sahab will ensure that all hindrances are removed. I sent an email around that time in the night to all our members with that message, not half believing it myself.

Sunday - 10th August 2008 : The first call I got was from Chandar at around 7.15 a.m. who enquired how safe it was to venture out on the roads. Were they motorable enough ? How about water logging as the TV news and the newspapers carried reports of people being evicted in house-boats etc. I knew that such a thing had happened in Toli Chowki area and that the rest of the city was not that badly affected. I came out in the open and lo and behold ! The skies were all clear and no rain at all. I assured Chandar that everything was perfect and that they should not have any difficulty in travelling by their car. I was also to start from my house around 9.00 a.m. and I fondly hoped it would not start raining again. As the day progressed, all signs of even a drizzle went astray and the weather was getting better by the minute. Yes indeed Rafi Sahab 'paved the way' as I had written in my email of the previous night. Chandar and Mrs. Radha Chandar covered all of those 30 Kms. I and my wife Vijaya too covered 24 Kms. None of us had any difficulty in reaching Padmanabhan's house.

Shirish Kulkarni had to cancel some of his engagements, including the reception of a marriage on the 9th (for which he had come specifically), owing to the rampaging rains. No autorickshaw was willing to take him to Narayanguda on the 9th August. But today morning, there was no such problem and having talked to Ramakrishna, Shirish took the auto-rickshaw upto Jubilee Bus Stand in Sec'bad. The others too came easily.

Sunil Sharma, N. R. Padmanabhan, R. Padmanabhan, S. Ramakrishna, S. Chandar, Shirish Kulkarni and myself, all went to the Community Hall at Venkatapuram Colony. The ladies stayed back at Padmanabhan's house. We discussed the agenda that we had set for the day and promptly took some concrete decisions. I am giving the same for the benefit of all our members.

1. The name "ABADRAFI" will be dropped and we will be known as RAFI FOUNDATION - HYDERABAD CHAPTER. This was consequent to the policy of the Rafi Foundation to have a common nomenclature.

2. An Executive Committee consisting of 7 members (including three principal Office-bearers) was formed.

PRESIDENT : S. RAMAKRISHNA
SECRETARY: A.S. MURTY
TREASURER: S. CHANDER

Other Executive Committee Members :
1. Mrs. Radha Chander (representing the ladies)
2. R. Padmanabhan
3. G Sunder Rajan
4. Sunil Sharma.

The other decision was with regard to augmentation of our resources by way of a regular membership fee and after some discussions the following was agreed upon unanimously :

1. FAMILIES (Two or more members) Rs.200.00 per month

2. INDIVIDUALS : Rs. 100.00 per month.

Shrish Kulkarni from Rafi Foundation (national) offered to be a member (a Honorary member) and paid a one time fee of Rs.500.00

All others too instantly contributed their monthly fee and Chander made the collections.

After spending more than two hours at the Community Hall and having made a headway in most of our agenda items, it was time for us all to join the ladies at Padmanabhan's house to continue our musical session.

More members joined there viz Raghavendra Rao, Mrs. Nirmala Dhepe, Sanjay Deshpande, Mrs. Shubada Deshpande and Sachin Deshpande.

The full reporting on the musical session is given in part-II of this reporting.

........... to be continued .........

RAFI FOUNDATION

HYDERABAD CHAPTER
PART - II
--

Further to my mail on the proceedings of our meeting today we re-assembled at Padmanabhan's house for our musical session. At the outset, we would like to thank Padmanabhan, Mrs. Meenakshi and their son Raghu for once again arranging the Community Hall and their house for our musical session today. The rains were a dampener and we were not fully represented today. But the spirit of those assembled was equally matching. While some of our members could not attend due to personal reasons, those who did enjoyed every minute of it. Mahmood had informed me on the 2nd Aug itself that he will be leaving for Tatanagar and would not be available for the musical session. Sunder Rajan informed me in the morning that he too would not be joining us. We learnt that A V Srinivasan too was tied up with some personal work. Subramaniam, was resting at home after the minor surgery that he had undergone yesterday. Ramakrishna who was with us for the meeting, had to attend a marriage and left after we re-assembled at the house of Padmanabhan.

We had requested our members that some of them could bring in some food items and the ladies took it up in right earnest. Soon after we finished reporting our deliberations earlier at the Community Hall to the others who had joined us a bit late, no further time was lost in the singing session. Chander, Mrs. Radha Chander, Padmanabhan, Sunil Sharma (Sahil for most of us), N. R. Padmanabhan, self and my wife Vijaya, Shirish Kulkarni, Mrs Nirmala Dhepe and Raghavendra Rao, all took turns in holding the mike and singing some of very best of Rafi Sahab's songs. Mrs Shubada Deshpande too was inclined today to sing but gave it up after sometime. Maybe she will sing from the next time onwards.

The break for lunch signalled the end of the singing but we had a new insight from Mrs Meenakshi who introduced us all to Bruno Groening Circle of Friends and Mrs. Gartner from Germany spoke to all of us individually over the phone. Around 4.00 p.m. most of our members left for their respective homes and it was understandable owing to the bad weather.

On the whole, an enjoyable day worth remembering for the songs, the rains and Rafi Sahab's divine intervention.

I and Padmanabhan will be in Bangalore on the 17th and 18th to attend the grand musical show by BAAR BAAR RAFI (Bangalore Chapter of the Rafi Foundation).

The other day, the two of us met Azgar Khan at his house in Begumpet. Azgar Khan, a software professional, is a big time Rafi-fan. His videos of songs of Rafi Sahab are on the youtube and he is also a friend on my Orkut profile. He too had informed that he will attend the musical session today. Perhaps the bad weather kept him at bay and we hope that he will join us from next time onwards.

While the musical session was going on, I talked to Tanvir Beg, whose mobile number stared at me on my missed calls list. When told that we were having our musical session, Beg Sahab wanted me to keep him informed also so that he too could attend from next time onwards. I have added the email ids of both Azgar Khan and Tanvir Beg and request all to note these for future reference. Tanvir Beg Sahab is an ardent music lover, a great musical shows organizer and also a good friend to me and Ramakrishna.

I also found Ms. G Sailaja enquiring yesterday by email about the location of Padmanabhan's house and I gave her a detailed account of the same. However she too could not come, mostly due to the uncertain weather and we hope she too joins us at the earliest. Her email id has been in circulation for sometime now.

We hope more and more new members would start to join us from the next time onwards.

Details of our next musical session will be advised to all, as and when finalized.
